THE DICK van DYKE SHOW
premiered 3rd October 1961 after a pilot ran in 1960. It ran for 5 seasons and won awards for Outstanding Comedy series in ’63, ’64, & ’66.
The plot centred on the work and home life of a television comedy writer.
Dick van Dyke came to TV after recognition on Broadway and radio.
Amongst his many film roles those in Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang stand out. His later TV work included Diagnosis Murder in which he co-starred with his son Barry.
Dick van Dyke’s ‘cockney’ accent in the 1964 film Mary Poppins caused great comment.
