Dashiell Hammett
American author, scriptwriter, political activist.
died 10th January 1961
Hammett had been a detective with Pinkerton’s Agency which equipped him to write the first authentic ‘private eye’ stories.
Sam Spade was amongst his most remembered characters.
The classic films ‘The Maltese Falcon’ and ‘The Thin Man’ were based on his novels.
In 1953 Hammett refused to give names of other alleged communists to a Senate Committee and his work was blacklisted.
