THE TROPIC OF CANCER by HENRY MILLER
The novel was published in France 1934 and immediately banned by the US Customs Service from being imported into the USA declaring it obscene. In 1950 the director of the American Civil Liberties Union attempted to import the book which led to a court case where the verdict of ‘obscene’ was confirmed.
In 1961, 60 obscenity lawsuits in over 21 US states were brought against booksellers who sold the book. It was 1964 before the US Supreme Court overruled court findings that Tropic of Cancer was obscene.
