The Common Market

UK Prime Minister Harold MacMillan announced in the House of Commons that moves to try to join the European Common Market will now go ahead. Ted Heath, deputy foreign secretary was appointed to conduct the negotiations.
The offer to negotiate for membership will depend on satisfactory arrangements for special needs e.g. farmers, the Commonwealth and fellow members of EFTA, (European Free Trade Area)
President de Gaulle of France warned if UK wanted club rules changed negotiations may take a long while.
