Letter 12

Dagenham

Essex

1st April 1963

Dear Lena,

I am not sure whether it is my turn to write or not.  I have lost touch with everything lately.  Only four weeks Saturday!!   I’m never given a chance to forget it now.  Everything I say or do is about the wedding.  When I have some time to relax I get so terribly excited and nervous I have to get up and do something to calm myself.

This evening the bridesmaids and I had to go to the dressmaker for a fitting of our dresses.  It was a marvellous feeling to try on my dress.

Two weeks ago Alan and I went to see our house.  We were terribly disappointed when we saw that there was still so much to be done.  We were sure that it wouldn’t be finished in time.  Alan’s brother, who lives quite near it has been watching it for us.  Yesterday we heard that the brickwork is complete and the men are working inside.  That made us very pleased.  They have done so much in the past fortnight that is seems almost sure they will have it finished by the 4th May. In case something goes wrong perhaps you should send your next letter here and my mother will pass it on to me.

We have called our house ALAMORE.  A combination of Alan and Maureen, only we had to spell my half differently.  We thought ‘alamaur’ looked very strange.

My new name and address will be:-

Mrs. Maureen Blake

Alamore

***  Ferry Road

Hullbridge

Hockley

Essex

I still have to think about it before I write it.  It doesn’t seem at all familiar to me.

Last Friday Alan and I went to Alan’s company’s dance.  Of course, everyone in his office knew we were getting married soon and strange people kept coming up to me and wishing me good luck and best wishes.  I hadn’t seen any of these people before.

So far we have bought a bedroom suite and a dining room suite for the house.  You may not believe this but we wanted to get a Scandinavian design dining room suite but it was almost twice as expensive as most other furniture.  We compromised and bought a suite that is almost the same style – but cheaper!

I can’t think of anything else to write about.  Except, have a nice Easter and if you can spare a thought in the middle of your exam.  Think of me at 3pm on May 4th.

From, for the last time

Maureen Brown
