Letter 10
Dagenham
Essex
1st March 1963
Dear Lena,
Would you like to have a progress report on my wedding arrangements? I think everyone around me must be bored with hearing about them. In a letter you can stop reading when you have had enough!
The house is full of boxes and parcels. In my bedroom alone (and you know how small it is) there is a tea-chest and four cardboard boxes full of ‘bottom drawer’ things (things for the house). There is hardly space to turn around. In fact, we have decided that on the day of the wedding we will have to fold my bed down to give me space to dress.
We have made all the arrangements at the church and nearly all for the reception afterwards. Now we have to find a photographer and some cars oh! and the flowers. I have decided to hold a prayer book instead of a bouquet of flowers. I want my dress to be very wide, so I thought a big bouquet would spoil the outline. I want the bridesmaids to have a small spray of white flowers.
A friend’s father is a printer and will print the invitations for us. They should be ready by the end of the month. I have ordered some extra so I will be able to send you one to see.
I have been planning my trousseau. I have made a list of things I will have to buy and things I can make. I asked friends if they wanted any knitting done for them so to give me some extra money for clothes. I have been so busy since Christmas knitting for other people that I haven’t had time to make anything for myself.
Has your weather been as bad as we have been having? I have never seen so much snow. At last it seems to be thawing. Today we could see some patches of green in the garden, the first time since Boxing Day.
I have just had a thought! You will probably only be able to write one more letter to this house. That brings the wedding closer than ever.
Maureen
