Letter 9

Dagenham

Essex

9th February 1963

Dear Lena,

I never realised getting married was such hard work.  All last year we were saying ‘once Christmas is over the time will go quickly’.  We were perfectly right, we have been so busy we haven’t noticed the days go by.  Only TWELVE weeks to go and such a lot to be done.

Since Christmas we have been concentrating mainly on the house.  We went to an Estate Agency the Saturday after Christmas and he showed us the plans of ten new houses being built.  The only one not yet sold seemed to be exactly what we were looking for.  I will draw a plan to send to you.

The only thing we don’t like about it is that it is such a long way from London.  It is in a place called Hullbridge, about 40 miles east of London.  About 5 years ago it was a small village but gradually more and more houses are being built there.  It is a beautiful country area and only a quarter of a mile from a river.  We will live on the main road and have a bus-stop just outside our door where we will catch a bus to the train station.  The train journey to London will only take an hour so the time of the journey to work each day will not worry us but it means the train fares will be so expensive.  We have decided that if it is too much I will leave the Bank and get a job nearer home.

Last week I was talking to Mum about cookery.  There were so many things I didn’t know.  I panicked and spent all evening copying out recipes.  I had writers’ cramp when I finished..

You know, I just can’t think of anything else to write about but the wedding arrangements.  I’ve told you all about those so I’ll have to finish now.

Maureen
