Letter 8

Dagenham

Essex

27th December 1962

Dear Lena,

I am so ashamed!  I have been looking for your last letter to me and the latest I can find is 13th October.  I am so sorry to keep you waiting for so long for a reply.  I haven’t any real excuse, except that it has been one of those ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’ things.

We have made the final arrangements for our wedding.  It will be a choral service with the organ and will be in the church at the end of our road on the 4th May 1963 at 3 pm.

We haven’t found anywhere to live yet.  The date seemed so far away that we decided to leave everything until after Christmas.  Then, two weeks ago we realised that if we allowed ourselves only three weeks to do what we wanted to the house and three months for the legal details to be dealt with (which is about the average) we will have to choose a house by the second week in January.  It was a shock.

We wrote at once to a lot of different estate agents but they couldn’t show us around until after Christmas.  We wish we had started sooner.  It has brought everything terrifyingly close.

Thank you very much for our Christmas present.  We are very pleased to have such a smart candle holder.  Did you enjoy your Christmas?  We went to family parties on Sunday and Christmas evening and had a quiet time on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.  As I kept telling everyone, it was my last Christmas at home.  That makes me feel so sad.

Most of our presents were for our new home.  I was pleased when I opened them.  There is one problem though, nobody knew what we already have.  We have collected 24 glasses, 5 pairs of pillowcases, 8 tea cloths and 11 hand towels.  We have no tablecloths or sheets.

I am not sure how long your Christmas holidays are so I thought it best to send this to your home not to your university address.

A Happy New Year to You

Love

Maureen
